Overview
Our RYA Powerboat Instructor Course is designed to equip you with the essential skills and knowledge needed to effectively instruct the RYA National Powerboat Scheme in a safe and proficient manner.
The course runs over 4 days, including the pre-assessment, and includes both practical and theoretical training scenarios.
During the training, candidates will deliver short sessions to enhance their personal skills and teaching capabilities within a secure training environment. The course focuses on teaching effective methods of instruction, coaching techniques, debriefing strategies, and course structuring.
While skill revision is included, proficiency in powerboating is a prerequisite for participation in this course.
All aspiring Powerboat Instructors must complete a mandatory 1-day pre-assessment course to evaluate their personal boat handling skills. This assessment is conducted on the first day of the course, and the fee for the pre-assessment is included in the overall course fee.
Course prerequisites include completion of the pre-assessment, possession of valid certifications such as a First Aid Certificate, RYA Powerboat Level 2, and RYA VHF Short Range Certificate. Candidates must also have at least 5 years of powerboating experience (or one season full-time equivalent), and the minimum age requirement is 16 years old. Ideally, candidates should have familiarity with a range of craft to broaden their knowledge of powerboats. Additionally, it is recommended that candidates have theory knowledge at the RYA Day Skipper Theory level, with holding the certificate being advisable.
