Overview
The RYA Day Skipper Theory Course is perfect for anybody looking to master the basics of chart work, navigation, meteorology, collision regulations, and seamanship. Our classroom-based course puts you before an experienced instructor and allows you to immerse yourself in the subject over six days.
Having completed the course, you will have the knowledge and confidence to navigate a yacht in familiar waters during daylight. If you want to complete the Day Skipper Practical Course, we recommend completing the Day Skipper Theory first.
Being part of a group you will learn from others and have the benefit of seeing our safety procedures and electronic equipment we use on our yachts.
Course content includes:
- Introduction to the chart, Latitude and Longitude, navigation equipment, books, and publications.
- Chartwork, plotting a course.
- Different methods to fixing your position.
- How to use electronic chart plotters and navigational equipment.
- Plotting an Estimated Position and a Course to Steer, taking into account tide and wind.
- How to create a passage and pilotage plan from scratch.
- Meteorology and how to interpret a weather forecast, and local weather effects, sea breeze, and fog.
- I.R.P.C.S (rules of the sea)
- Calculate tidal heights
- Safety equipment and procedures onboard.

Almost all customers choose our accommodation option. Flying Fish crew houses in Cowes are comfortable and centrally located, just a 5-minute walk to the town and our training centre. You can mix and socialise with other people on the course who, like you, will be completing the RYA Day Skipper Theory Course.
