All crew joining a commercial vessel must complete the STCW Course.  This six-day course will provide the knowledge and skills necessary to respond effectively to emergencies onboard and ensure the safety of the passengers and the vessel.

The STCW Course

On land we are fortunate to have emergency services to help us when things go wrong; however, at sea, ships rely on the crew to be the first responders. The STCW Course provides the crewmember with the practical skills and experience to fulfill that role until help arrives.

What does the STCW course cover?

This course covers five mandatory elements plus Security Awareness, which was introduced in 2014.

  1. Fire Fighting and Fire Prevention (A-VI/1-2)
  2. Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (A-VI/1-4)
  3. Proficiency in Security Awareness (A-VI/1-6)
  4. Sea Survival Techniques (AVI/1-1)
  5. Elementary First Aid (A-VI/1-3)

Training is split between classroom sessions and practical, hands-on skills and practical exercises. You will learn how to use the safety equipment onboard a vessel, from breathing apparatus to life rafts.

Upon successful completion of the STCW Course, you will receive your STCW certificates demonstrating competency in these essential skills. This certificate is usually required for employment in the maritime industry.

Under STCW, you are required to refresh your knowledge of Firefighting and Personal Survival every five years.

RYA Yachtmaster

We recommend that those applying for commercial endorsement for the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore or Ocean complete this STCW Course, as STCW certificates are recognised internationally.
